Launch the game and navigate to the singleplayer menu. Click create new world to initialize a fresh save file named my first world. This step establishes your base environment where all survival actions occur. Without a world loaded you cannot gather resources or craft items. The game menu closes and you spawn into a grassy biome immediately.

Approach any tree and hold the left click button to break blocks. Collect at least 10 wood logs from the surrounding forest area. Wood serves as the primary material for early crafting recipes. Failing to gather enough wood limits your ability to build tools later. You see wood icons appear in your hotbar inventory slots.

Open your inventory by pressing the e key on your keyboard. Convert the wood logs into planks then fill the 2 by 2 grid. This creates a crafting table which expands your recipe options significantly. A hand crafting grid restricts you to basic items only. The new table appears in your inventory ready for placement.

Place the crafting table down by right clicking on the ground surface. Use wood planks and sticks to forge a pickaxe and sword. These tools allow you to mine stone and defend against hostile mobs. Bare hands cannot break stone blocks effectively in survival mode. A stone pickaxe and iron sword appear in your hotbar.

Locate exposed stone blocks and dig down carefully using your new pickaxe. Extract 3 stone blocks while building a stairway back to the surface. Never dig straight down as lava pools often exist beneath the ground. Falling into lava causes immediate death and item loss. Your inventory now contains stone for upgrading equipment and building.

Find coal ore by scanning dark cave walls or underground surfaces. Craft torches using one stick and one coal piece per unit. Light prevents hostile mobs from spawning in your explored areas. Darkness invites dangerous enemies that attack without warning at night. Torches glow brightly when placed on stone or dirt walls.

Search deeper underground for iron ore which appears as spotted grey blocks. Gather approximately 20 iron ore pieces using your stone pickaxe. Iron is required for stronger armor and advanced tool recipes. You cannot mine iron with wooden or stone tools effectively. The collected iron ore sits in your inventory slots.

Construct a furnace using 8 stone blocks around the center crafting slot. Place iron ore in the top slot and fuel like coal in the bottom. Smelting converts raw ore into usable ingots for crafting gear. Raw ore cannot be used directly for making armor or tools. Shiny iron ingots appear in the furnace output slot.
